redlightmusic is an independent Seattle-based rock band featuring Peter Klett, founding member and guitarist of popular 1990s rock band Candlebox, a band with a definitive classic rock sound that belied the stereotype commonly attached to bands from Seattle in the early-to-mid nineties. Never the media darlings, the band did manage to sell nearly 6 million records over the course of 6 years and three albums.
Following the demise of his former band, Klett sought to reinvent himself with a new band and a new sound, shedding the hard-rock bombast of Candlebox and the dynamic solos that had made him famous. Now taking on the role of singer as well as the expected role of guitarist, the newfound challenge lied not only in successfully harnessing the existing fan base with an entirely new sound, but attracting new fans with only the power of the Internet at their disposal and without the benefit of a major record label’s resources.
Crucial Networking developed redlightmusic’s online presence from the ground up; from square one in 2002 to the present day. This has involved four generations of web sites, cover art for three records, promotional and live concert photography shot on location in Seattle and Massachusetts, and any and all manner of grassroots marketing, from exclusive web site content to mailing lists, promotional flyers, banner ads, and other viral marketing measures on emerging networking web sites like Myspace.com.
redlightmusic built a strong local fan base and released an EP independently in Seattle in early 2003. With Crucial Networking’s assistance, they also began picking up fans across the country by fostering the belief that the fans were getting in on the ground level of something special, and were truly a part of the evolution of a band. The web site has continually offered features not commonly found elsewhere: free downloads of live and demo versions of songs, and constant
interaction with the band themselves on the site’s message board and via Instant Messenger.
redlightmusic’s strong local fan base has swelled into the thousands and has grown to a national level; they’ve signed a recording contract with a major record label, released their first full-length record and seen it go to retail outlets nationwide, and have toured and continue to do so with national acts such as Tantric, 12 Stones and Adema.
